Hi
I'm Tim and I have just got into GIMP and am using it to make some maps for my D&D and Savage Worlds groups. I find GIMP wickedly complex, but fabulously complete for freeware. I draw reasonably well, though I got a bit out of practice in the last few years and am getting used to working with a tablet (just a Volito atm). I live in the Netherlands but I am mostly British.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
