I've been checking up on this site for a long while and I've finally decided to stop just gawking and officially register. Ever since I was a kid, I've loved geography and cartography in general. That passion has served me well in my 20+ years as a DM, but also got me interested in learning about various real world cultures. It's only been a couple of years since I've made the jump from hand-drawning my maps the old fashioned way, to using softwares like photoshop instead. Although I'm sure the tutorials on this site will provide a great help in that regard, my skills are still pretty limited at the moment and have only yielded minimum results, which brings me to the more practical reason for signing up with the guild; While I love map-making for personal reasons, I'm also an aspiring writer who is currently in the development stages of his first novel, while juggling a full load of other time-consuming responsabilities as well. At this point, it's become clear to me that if I seriously intend to get this project off the ground, I need to step away from the cartography aspects and focus back on the writing itself. Consequently, I'll be posting up a thread in the appropriate forum in the following weeks (I'll provide all the relevant information at that point). Meanwhile, I'll still be dropping by the guild to check out everyone else's awesome work, as well as learn everything I can to improve my own future map-making projects!

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.

Thanks! This site is even more full of awesome stuff than I remembered. I'm glad I finally signed up!
