Good ol' formal introductions.
Hey guys,
I work in the Dalhousie Map Collection/GIS Centre (thus work with both paper and digital maps) and have a background in graphic design and photography. I am currently studying Geography and GIS.
"We" at the Collection stumbled upon the Guild a few days ago (see my register date... haha) and fell in love with it. We are lucky enough to have on staff a classically trained cartographer who teaches a university level cartography course. The tutorials, as a resource, are incredible, and may make it into the curriculum (with due credit). Many of the finished maps are of the highest quality and sparked quite a discussion here.
I believe Fictional/Fantasy maps are a wonderful thing, and I look forward to becoming part of the community.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
