My name is Will and I run Roxorsoxoff Comics » "the most way past cool". I am a cartoonist and i've recently started enjoying map making. Here is one that I started for a story so far:

It's kind of a pirate "x marks the spot" theme... It was made in Gimp, about an hour.

And, I'm definitely looking for critiques or opinions, I would like to improve my map making.

Welcome to the Guild Will! That's a nice 1-hour map. One way to try to refine your technique is by playing around with the tutorials. There's allot of useful info for GIMP users here especially. Look forward to seeing more of your work.
