Hello,
I’m Elroy 1, an old gamer new to computer mapping. Until recently I did most of my work by hand, but I’ve always wanted my maps to look better. Right now I’m using Smartdraw because of my job and Paint because it’s easy. I have access to Adobe CS4 and I hope to have the time to learn how to use it in the coming year.

Not familiar with Smartdraw, but if you have access to Photoshop then there are lots of great tutorials for you to try, and pick up some tips, etc. If not there is always GIMP (an OpenSource Photoshop-like program) - lots of great tutorials for that too.

Looking forward to seeing some of what you can do.

Welcome to the guild! Dust off photoshop and get mapping! As SG said, plenty of tutorials for that. Smartdraw looks like it's geared for flowcharting and organograms etc. Which is great if you want a clean vector map, but for that olde worldy feel, you can't beat photoshop or the Gimp.
