Thanks for voting for my map, Ramah. Congratulations on the new Vaniya map, although the original remains my favourite (and one of my all-time favourites on CG). THW

Absolutely incredible work. You obviously have talent, but that's something many can claim (even myself to some degree). It's your dedication to perfection that's truly impressive. I never expected to use my own map for publication in my novel, but I dared to hope until I saw work like yours. I have yet to begin the daunting task of designing a print-worthy map, but artists like you, while intimidating, are a constant source of inspiration.

Thanks for sharing your work. I look forward to seeing more from you.

    Hi Ramah,

I have a question about your Aronbor map. Could you please check your private messages? Thanks!

    Hey Ramah...

I wonder when I will finish that map? Some days I want to start from scratch and re-figure out the landmasses... So... I guess I am not sure. I poured a lot of hours into working on it and learned a lot, but I am not sure where to go from where I am on the map.

I will likely do some work in the new year after I get through the next few creative projects I am on now.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

  9. ....And then there is the Automatic Forester. It's not perfect but it can make forests very quickly and you can use your own brushes with it. I'd recommend giving it a go if you haven't already. If you fiddle with it and get settings you are happy with it saves an absolute TON of time.

    Hope this helps.
  10. On the Vaniya map I placed each tree individually, apart from the northern area of The Ruhks, where I made some various multi-tree brushes to stamp them a little quicker. And as you can guess, it took a long time.

Since then I've got a few other techniques to speed it up a little, which you've already probably seen. In the elements forum in my hand-drawn brush thread, I posted a single, very large sheet of trees. I'm not saying to use these brushes, just pointing out the technique. With that layer of trees I can just delete the areas I don't want and leave what I do. It makes forests a LOT quicker than I did on Vaniya but it is still very fiddly when tidying up the forests. And of course, it takes ages to create the sheet in the first place. But once it's done it's done and you can use it again and again...

The Tumbleweed keeps on rolling...

by Ramah on 04-04-2019 at 01:44 PM
I knew this blog would be infrequent when I started it but I guess six years between posts is long enough.

Since I last updated, coding-wise, I've had bounteous times and barren times. I've had six months on and years off. I've added stuff, removed stuff, edited stuff and generally prevaricated the time away.

Some of the "Things" have changed immensely in that period of time (HillThing and TextThing) and others have hardly been touched (TreeThing and BorderControl),

Recent Progress

by Ramah on 01-05-2013 at 02:17 PM
So, I've made a little progress on the MapThing suite recently. Unfortunately it's not on HillThing though.

After recently spending an inordinately long time drawing, redrawing and shading a simple border I decided that I'd have a crack at automating some of the process. So I finally turned my attention to the newly re-christened BorderControl module for MapThing.

It's not feature-complete yet but I thought there was enough now to show a little of what it can do. So,

With the welcome post out the way...

by Ramah on 02-08-2012 at 07:24 AM
I thought I'd set out my stall as far as TreeThing is concerned.

So... what's the plan?

Well, first, a little history. As many old-timers here might know, TreeThing started out as the "Automatic Forest Generator" and was programmed by Fluesopp. It was a very simple program that took a png image and covered the non-transparent areas with trees. He very kindly made it open source and I used this as a springboard to start developing the idea in greater detail

Obligatory welcome post

by Ramah on 02-08-2012 at 06:23 AM
Hey there and welcome to Tumbleweed - an empty little part of the web that you are probably the first, and maybe only, person to visit.

I'll own up from the start - this will probably be updated infrequently. It is a little known fact (although known very well to my family) that I am an expert at starting things. Finishing them... not so much. But as I doubt there will be hordes of internet users hanging on my every word and desperate to find out what has been happening with me then
