    I made it in GIMP. I was messing around one day, found a script that came with GIMP and decided I would rather have something instead of nothing, so did a bit of tweaking to the output and poof....

    In GIMP, on the Xnts->Misc->Planet Render menu, this opens a window where you can set the base planet color, amount of darkness, direction of the light,etc. I found something I liked and then I did a selection and added some fog (with a filter plugin I found on the web somewhere) to add some "clouds".

    Let me know if you need any more help than that.
