I've decided to create a GIMP plugin (in C) for this functionality. My curiosity about GIMP plugins got the better of me. By the way, in case your interest has been piqued, my pseudocode neglects to mention one crucial thing. In my pseudocode, the control points of a Bezier curve are associated with the curve joining the two anchor points.

In the GIMP, the control points are associated with only one anchor point and the 2 curves (sometimes 1 curve if it's the first or last anchor point of a non-closed path) either side of the anchor point. One control point affects one curve, the other control point affects the other curve.

    Here's another way to see the difference (A = anchor; C1, C2 = 1st and 2nd control points):

    Pseudo: A-C1-C2-A-C1-C2-A-C1-C2...
    GIMP: C1-A-C2-C1-A-C2-C1-A-C2...

Sorry for the extra complexity. I will work on my plugin tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

Are you sure? I will describe the algorithm in pseudocode and words, because I don't want you scratching your head over my spaghetti Pascal or C code (which has a lot of extra confusing baggage added to it). OK done. Here is my description/pseudocode of the algorithm:

    http://www.ludicity.org/files/algorithm.txt

If it seems like too much work, don't worry about it, or just send me a starting template of script code, and then maybe I can try to do it myself. Whatever the case, thanks for your time.

Actually, looking at the source code of your fractalize path script, I believe my request would involve too much work on your part. I didn't realise the complexity and amount of work involved. So just ignore this request, sorry to bother you and have a nice day. Oh and thanks for those map tutorials!

Here is a link to a screenshot of a demo I wrote illustrating the Bezier smoothing algorithm:

    http://www.ludicity.org/images/bezierss.png

There are 16 Bezier curves in that image, each joined together by the smoothing algorithm. What the algorithm does is automatically manipulate each curve's control points so that each curve joins smoothly to the next. The algorithm involves inverting a potentially large tridiagonal matrix, but there are simple ways to do that.

I wonder if you could do something for me for which I would be eternally grateful. I am conversant in Pascal and C but not TinyScheme. I have an algorithm which smoothly joins Bezier curves together, by manipulating each curve's control points appropriately. The net effect is to automatically produce a smooth curve through a set of points.

I would like to create a GIMP script which takes a path, and smooths it out using the above algorithm. Would it be possible for you to create a GIMP script for me that takes a path, and merely shifts each of its control points to the left by 3 pixels, and up by 2 pixels? Perhaps wrapping up the control point shifting in a function, and having the main GIMP script function call that function?

I think that if I can start from a good base script, then maybe I might have a much better chance of being able to pull this off. It is so daunting starting from ground zero.

Yeah, it blurs in the preview window. Oh, now it's working. Maybe GIMP just needed turned off for a while before it would work? I should have just taken out the cartridge and blown in it... Thanks for your help!

    Hello RobA,

While I'm not temporally new to the forum, I did take a sabbatical from trying to make maps after (and partially due to) failing utterly. But, I have renewed my efforts, and am stuck in what is probably the same place I was before, although I don't remember for certain. On your "Using GIMP to Create an Artistic Regional RPG Map" tutorial, post #6, when I copy the Land Mask layer and rename it Sea Shape, the subsequent Gaussian Blur does not appear when I apply it, and I do not understand why. I followed all of the previous instructions exactly, and my settings all appear to be the same as those on your screenshot. Any advice on how to fix this would be most appreciated!

    Thank you very much!

    Hey Rob,
I am new to the forums and im trying out your gimp tutorial. When I use the Magic Wand to delete in step 4, it does not give me the crisp coaslines (the white is still cloudy and undefined). I think it may be because i am making a larger map (1200x1200 at 300dpi) and that is making the blur and clouds too small? Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Blackmojo
  9. Hi Rob

I'm currently in the middle of your Artistic Regional RPG Map tutorial (which is the best I've seen, btw), but I'm a little bit stuck:

"Use the magic wand again to select the non-mountain area (like with the land) and create a new layer called “Mountains Mask” with a white on black. (Also the white colour selection as a new selection mask using Select->Save to Channel).

Now we want to create a heightfield from this. The easiest way I have found to do this is to copy the current visible image (Edit->Copy Visible) then paste it (CTRL-V) to a floating selection. Click the New Layer button to get it on its own layer rather than a floating layer. Now stretch the colour range out (Color->Auto->Normalize)"

Ok, I got as far as the color-auto-normalize bit, but when I click normalise nothing happens. Any idea what I could have done wrong?

I know you're probably driven mad with people asking you questions, but I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out.

Never mind I found the answer by reading all the replies to your tutorial. Thanks again
