It renders the combined gps data etc... with an open source GIS mapping projected called MAPNIKOpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways.

I found some streets in the wrong place in my town. I was going to fix them, but it requires that you sign up before you edit, so meh.
I can definitely understand that they control edit access.
Why dont you send them an email and point out the errors?
