    Wip Arlion: A Test

I spent a few hours last night going through some of the tutorials and I came to this one. It seemed easy enough for even my procedurally challenged brain to follow and after an hour or so I came up with this. I have to admit that continent scaled maps are not my favorite but I think I'll stick to this one to see where it goes.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.

Lookin' good so far, JT. The mountains could do with something more....another bevel layer on top of the first maybe?

Ok got some more done on this. Following Ravells advice I bumped the mountains again Let me know if that's better (looks better to me). Also I changed the ground texture. The original one was ok but was a little too large. Lastly I added some forests sprinkled around. I could use some feedback as to whether or not they look ok. Thanks

Better, but lot's of artifacts. Perhaps a bit of blur followed by some smudge with a soft brush..

Following your suggestion I blurred both the mountains and the high ground layer. I'm finding it difficult to get rid of all the artifacts. If I smudge/blur TOO much it destroys the shapes of the mountains. I also went through and fixed some of the rivers so that they make sense

Try adding a little monochromatic noise to the mountain areas after you blur them. I'm not sure where those blocky artifacts came from - was it a scaling operation in GIMP?

Bump mapping using a gradient created using the blend tool can sometimes create those artifacts. Usually I apply a Gaussian blur before bump mapping the texture in question, avoids it.

I'm not sure how the artifacts were created I'm assuming during the bump mapping process. I'll try your suggestion

Following waldronates' suggestion I added a noise layer to the mountains. It helped but made the tops of the mountains lose some definition. If I try to bump map them again I get more artifacts so all in all I think I'll take them they way they are. I started to dot the cities also.

Here it is in a finished state (I think) I have never had need of a purely original continent before so this was a learning experience for me. All the names were randomly generated with the kingdom names being made up by me.
