Default Holmgard - My first hexagon map

As a long time lurker I would like to start by thanking everyone here for sharing their creativity and inspiration with others.

I have made a map for a gaming convention in northern Sweden. It is meant as a base for a couple of sandbox style sessions of old school roleplaying where much of the world is improvised ingame.

I'm trying to make it a rather generic fantasy map. As it is my first hexagon map it would be nice get some advice. What do you think? Is it missing something? Are there some important fantasy map feature that need to be included?

Scale: 1 hex equals 5 kilometers

The map symbols are taken from or inspired by Olaus Magnus map of Scandinavia, Carta Marina. Im working on compiling a collection or brush or something.

I would actually like to see this map without the hexes. The mountains look pretty good, but are messed up by the presence of the hexes running through them, for me at least(ie, my mind can't separate the elements).

I disagree with jfrazierjr. This map with the hexes is very old school and I liek it. Makes things very easy for a game master. However, if you're going to do that, you have to give us an indication of how big a hex is.

    Nice initial offering!

Piscivorous is right, old school. My old DM had 18 pages of hex maps hand drawn and colored on both sides that he made back in the 80's. Hex maps invite nostalgia for me. Very nice.

Forgot about the scale. One hex is 5 kilometers long (3.1 miles for you that still live in the middle ages. ). The area is about 100x150 km. (similar to Connecticut i think).

Here is a version without the hex grid:

I will probably strech at least one of the river arms to reach beyond the map.

If you are going to keep the map in black and white you should add some kind of indicator for water... some wavy lines at the coast or something similar.

I was just about to call the River Police on you when I realized that the object beneath the mountains in the upper left area was meant to be a lake.

Else it is a very fine map. Nice drawing all around.

I like it a lot, but agree that a scale would be a great addition.

Here is the, probably not, final version of the map I've used this weekend as a basis for several gaming sessions of old school pen and paper DnD. There is some kind of glitch in the wave patern but it didn't show in print.

I love how it says "Skala en hexagon je pet km" (i.e. it's readable in every language.)

It looks pretty good. Great for an old school game indeed!
