I've 'finished' the terrain on my first major project in GIMP. I'm pretty happy with most of it. The one thing I'm still working out is some kind of effect along the coast to lighten the transition. Any recommendations?

You can try a slight Gaussian blur, you'll have to experiment to find something suitable.
You could also try a light outer gloq around the land massed or maybe a combination of the two.
