Well, after some work with GIMP and the fine Tutorial by RobA This is what I have produced. It seems 'too small' for the scale of the area but I'm committed to finishing it, or at least getting it to a point where I don't feel I have to apologize for it.
Any criticisms and help are appreciated.

Mountains on this are always the hardest part but since I haven't done this tut I can't help ya with that. I will say that that the grassland colors look sweet. You're on the right path, just some tinkering around with the mountains is all you need.
