    Post a generic earthlike planet

This is the kind of map I make to use for mapping around 3D worlds.

This one was a WIP that I abandoned because I couldn't get the effect I wanted from the oceans. Also, it lacks bump mapping.

I start with Wilbur to get a map I like, then I save the grayscale, color, and sea masks. Sometimes other stuff like contour maps, depending on what I'm going for.

I then do a LOT of mucking about with GIMP and images of rock to get the land looking good.

The hard part is shifting the layers to keep making it tileable.

I threw together a rendered version as a test render. That's why the lighting is less dramatic than I'd prefer in a proper composition.

I'll try to post more samples over the next week.

    Praise Nice technique!

Nice technique, as there are lots of GIMP users here, though I'd love to see the kind of planet that you'd be proud of.

Its also nice to see another Illinoisan! Have some REP!

Wouldn't that be Illini, or is that just the "nick-name" for the college?

In any case, Waystar that is a pretty nice map. You should jump in on this months challenge.

Be sure read thru some of the tutorials and/or the map WIP threads and I think you'll find tips, pointers, etc. that will increase the quality of your maps dramatically.

Make a tutorial explaining his technique, would be formidable.
