Thread: June/July Lite Challenge Entry - The Great Hippodrome

Wip June/July Lite Challenge Entry - The Great Hippodrome

Whereon daredevil charioteers of the Imperial City risk life and limb to win glory before the eyes of 400,000 cheering spectators.

I am using Inkscape to design the isometric structures. Will probably also make use of GIMP for any texturing work. The architecture, layout and terminology are based on historic Romano-Byzantine hippodromes, especially the Circus Maximus.

This already looks really good. A very nice contribution to this month's light challenge.

That looks really nice. I'm sure it'll look even better when it has texture and stuff.

So do the citizens riot over their favourite charioteering teams too? =P

They do. There's also a huge gambling business built around betting on the winner, with lots of dirty play aimed to fix the races.

To give credit where it's due, in the making of this map I have enjoyed an invaluable resource in the book The Ancient City - Life in Classical Athens & Rome by Peter Connolly and Hazel Dodge. It's a veritable goldmine of information on classical Greek and Roman architecture and city planning, with absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, detailed illustrations. Without it I wouldn't have much of a clue about what I'm doing with this.

    Oh, wow! Treasure! =D
I have The City in History, by Lewis Mumford (very heavy text) but the 'illustrations' are mostly just photos of ruins for that time period.
