Looking at learning more about using GIMP, Inkscape initially and when finances allow buying CC3 and adding features over time. I have knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator but don't own them....plus stuck on a 32bit OS at this time so no Adobe CC sub

Guys, thank you so much for this.

It has been an excellent start for me to research what programs I should learn and/or what is right for me.

I have CC3, and I can't seem to get part of a map to copy into a different map with a different scale.

I like CC3, but have problems changing the background color. I get a pop up that say that "there is no layer with this name freeze background" but when I look at the sheets it is at the top of the list with an F in the box. Click image for larger version.

If a layer is frozen it can't be edited. On check the frozen box then you can change the entity

95% Of the maps that I have created are hand drawn, scanned and edited in photoshop. Sometimes, there isn't any editing done at all. Sketchup is another tool that I have recently started to use to bring my maps to life.

I use CC3 and FT3 for mapping. I used to do a lot of mapping till about 5 years ago (and was pretty active on the old CC2 mailing list), now I'm getting back into it again.
