    You can make it representative, by having a few wood coloured rectangles stretching out into the water. This is easy to recognise as a set of docks. Or you can go for something more explicit, in which case you should probably draw in a breakwater (few docks are totally unprotected from the open sea) and then figure out where you'd have large and small ship traffic coming in.

    A google image search for harbour/harbor and breakwater are good ones to start with. Hope that helps!

    Okey.. Tried to add my docks (Thanks Sap. Although I didn't go for such an advance harbour). Also played some with the gradient map
