Thread: Inexpensive Domain Registration?

    Default Inexpensive Domain Registration?

    Hi-

I would like to register a domain name now, with the intent to host my portfolio there (as opposed to the DA portfolio in my sig).

Any suggestions on a good registrar that:

    - takes paypal
    - is reasonably priced
    - will support dynamic DNS redirection (maybe, as I have a home server that I could use instead of hosting)

    Thanks for any tips.

I don't have much experience beyond Network Solutions but have never had any problems with them (after nearly ten years as a client). A quick search of their site made me think they support PayPal. Not sure what dynamic DNS redirection is so can't answer you there. I imagine there are cheaper alternatives but so much of the Internet is fly-by-night that I've never really been tempted to take a chance on any of them. Doubt this helped much but I hope it did.

Edit: They do bug you to death to renew, though. I got my first notice today for a domain that expires in January of next year. As you get toward the final month the notices get rather dire.

I have my domain name reserved via www.godaddy.com but I have yet to set up an actual website anywhere.

I register my domains on godaddy and host with dreamhost (since i'm in the internet marketing biz, i own and host a lot of sites - with dreamhost i can get a lot of sites on one server). If you're only hosting one site, consider bluehost - they're cheap but have a good rep in the industry for shared hosting. I really like dreamhost, but they're just a little more expensive than bluehost. I also have a few older sites hosted with godaddy (make sure you specify you want a linux server if you plan on running anything open source or php-based). I've never run into any problems, but generally I like to register and host at different places so I don't put all my eggs in one basket.

I registered my primary domain through A Small Orange, which hosts my websites. I am pretty sure they resell Godaddy registrations. My second domain (ASO will only register one, unfortunately) is through Namecheap. Each of those registrations is about $10 / year. I don't know if either of them takes PayPal, but they're the cheapest I've seen so far, and I haven't had any troubles with them.

You can always have a look at dyndns.com. You can buy a domain through them (you can also get one free if your satisfied with something like "yourdomainnam".homeserver.com). They do support dynamic IP's, as is quite obvious if you look at there name :-)
