Help Help with first computer map

    Hello All,

Okay, I am trying RobA's Gimp Artistic Regional RPG Map tutortial.
I'm attempting to create a district in a city, where a river that runs through the middle
of the whole city, braids in this section. My goal is to complete the water, then
add in the city over the land areas.

As you can see, the land is not bad, but the something happened during the river section
(or sea as the tutorial labels it).

Any suggestions as to where the water went wrong? Thank you.

    Steel engravings, Gothic lettering,
A bar of sulfur left in a cabinet,
    The heavy tollings of insomnia,
    Sunrises and sunsets and twilights,
    Echoes, undertows, sand, lichen, dreams,
I am nothing but those images...

Hmmm, seems that the highlight on the water is too strong. Are you able to post the layer effect settings you are using? The bevel seems to be up rather than down?

    Hi Aval,

Forgive my noob-ness, but do you mean a screenshot?

Yeah a screenshot of each effect would be good.

    Aval, et. al

Sorry for the tardy delay. Spent the day studying for a test tomorrow.

Attached (I believe) in order are the first four screenshots in order of adding each layer.
I will add a couple more in the next post.

Thank you for your time and any insight offered.

    Namasté,
    ~Tim

    Default Pt.2 Screenshots

    Part two of screenshots.

Unfortunately, the fifth shot uploaded jumbled and I cannot figure out how to delete without
allowing the 1 hour time limit expire.

Hopefully this will be enough. The rest of the layers are only land and dirt based.

    Thanks again.

Can you show us the "settings" for the effects that you have applied to get the gloss and bevel effect on the water?

Err... I didn't realise how different the GIMP interface is to PS. Maybe a GIMP user will be able to help you better.

    Hi Aval,

I'm sorry, but what exactly are the "settings"?

In GIMP do you have control panels where you set things like what colour your "outer glow" is or perhaps how high the bevel is, or % highlight opacity etc?

    Like this in Photoshop 6;

No, Aval, there are no layer effects in Gimp.

The thing that looks like a bevel glow is the water effect using the displace filter - it look slike it was only run once, rather than twice with opposite signs as per the tutorial.
