Thread: intro

    Default intro

    Hello everyone!

I got interested in mapping as I discovered MapTool not so long ago. I've moved away from a great DnD group and I'd like to keep in touch since we have such a good chemistry. I've never DMed or mapped, but I'm willing to learn

I'm proficient with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as I used them for scientific purposes. I think I'll try to reproduce a few WotC maps first, but in the long run I want to make my own maps.

You use photoshop for science? Do tell

Maptool is a great program, and there are now a lot of maps out there to use, not least of which are the WotC Dungeon maps that are put up on the web without the labels on. Start using those, and then you'll naturally graduate to making your own. Post a map in the WIP section and you should get some good feedback. If you need focused critique, then you can always pm people and you'll get a response as the site's got pretty large so I know that I don't get a chance to see everything that's up every day.

    Welcome to the guild!

Hi MagicChicken, welcome to the guild - I see you allready sparked torstans interest by saying "science" *lol* ... now just mention black holes and you'll have a friend for life *lol* ... and thank you for bringing up maptools in this regard - I've never checked it out as I thought it only handled maps, but now I see it also have chat so one can play long-distance ... does it also have dice rolling? (so players can't cheat?)
I've been using Fantasy Grounds myself for the rare online gaming session.

    What a warm welcome

torstan : In biochemistry and moleculat biology, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator are used to make figures, hopefully for a high impact scientific article For example: there's some sexy data on an autoradiograph. I scan it, save it, and open in Photoshop to manipulate. What do I do with it? First, I crop the picture to include only what's relevant (if there are other experiments on the same autoradiograph). Then I would fiddle with the upper and lower thresholds (cutoffs?) so the bands (labeled nucleic acids or whatnot) are easier to see. You never modify the curves or doctor the pictures. That's fraud. And your colleagues will find out.

Cool I'm a physicist and have used Photoshop occasionally to reformat plots, but I normally try hard to nail it down with the original code - normally matplotlib for python. If you have to scan in the data originally though I can totally understand why you're using PS and illustrator.

Nerdiness is relative, and I think most people get off lightly beside me so you'll be just fine
