More trees and a first idea for an illustration added. Three famous explorers of Maargard's history.
I welcome any C&C on the illlustration. I'm still not sure if it fits to the map. For the upper right I'm planning an expedition in the great desert, for the lower left a large, fortified harbor entry, for the lower right a very large light house.

Second illustration added and a first try for city icons.

Thank you, Diamond. I'm not sure however if I keep them or if I place some smaller maps in the corners.

You could do maps on the right, pictures on the left...

I did away with the illustrations, I simply had the feeling they didn't fit with the rest of the map. Instead I will try to make some astronomical drawings. Maybe I find another way to incorporate the illustrations in a less intrusive way.

    Wip New Try

Ok, I guess this combination of illustrations and map/map parts could work.
The illustrations are now less intrusive and don't draw too much attention away from the actual map, at least that's my impression now. I would welcome some feedback on this issue.

    Again this irritating upload issue

Yeah, I like the illustrations. That harbor one in particular is very nice.

I like the plain version, shrug. If you really want those corners filled then maybe you could just detail 4 important areas in either regional or city scale. If you want to go all out then fill all of that empty space with stuff like cherubs, horses, boats, monsters, etc. like those highly decorated maps. But that takes more time than making the map.
