not sure where to begin

I'm totally green with creating maps (outside of drawing them up with pencil and paper) or using any sort of program. I'm looking at gimp and trying to read up on the tutorials and user's guide, but still feeling kind of lost. The map i want to start on first is a dense forest surrounding a mountain range. If using a grid will make it easier then it's a 10x10 cross section grid, on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. sorry if i'm a total noob at this :-/

Well Raven, the first place to start is to have a gander at this, then try a few of the tuts just to see what the prog is capable of. Once you got your feet wet, then you should have a better idea of what to do.
