I'm thinking that with those trees you need to show a darker center with the start of branches going out in every direction, maybe even some leaves showing until the branches reach the edge of the trunk area. It looks like a stump cut off which works well for a place holder but it's going to make people think they can jump straight over or attack through it. Come to think of it, this could be hilarious from a Game Master's point of view:

GM:"So, you want to jump straight ahead and attempt to land on the opposite side?"
Player: "Yes, I have high strength and excellent jumping skills."
GM: "Well, if you are sure, give me a roll."
    moments later....
GM: "Belgar crouches down and with a mighty surge of his powerful legs vaults himself face first into a two foot diameter tree trunk. He might have made it if only his head was a nail. Too bad he wasn't wearing a helmet."

The other thing you can do to sell it is add the full shadow of the trees upon the ground. This would define the shape of the tree above. It's a tough one to pull off though so keep at it. I'm sure it's going to be great when you are done.

Tweaked the river around a bit after showing my wife. "Is it a stone riverbed?" wasn't exactly what I was hoping to hear So the reflection highlights are brighter, and it's now more transparent along the banks and more opaque in the middle. Also decided to go with the night-time look, and added a moon reflection onto the water as well

Jax, I'll probably try your suggestion of branches, but I have a suspicion it will end up looking more like one of my cat's hairballs. Hopefully not

LOL, I tell ya man, those wives are not afraid to kick you in the artistic nuts one little bit are they?

If it was me I think I would try making the branches on one layer and put some leaves on another so the leaves can be transparent over the branches which might help. I'm interested to see how it comes out. I think Torstan has done some trees like this and someone around here had a real nice map with trees that you could see through...I'll have to see if I can find that again.

Well here it is. Unless I'm able to figure out a better way to do the trees (that doesn't look like an adventure with a flu-struck child), this will be the final WIP. It's only 50% resolution here, I'll see if I can get up somewhere at full size and link to it here. At full size it would print out with the hex grid at 1" per hex.

Very, very minor update. Added a note to the title that states that each hex is equal to 5 feet. O.o
