    Default Coastline How-to Question?

Working for the first time ever in gimp. Have read many tutorials and have things mostly rolling along. One thing I am struggling with is my ocean/coastline. How do I create an ocean layer and have the colors lighten as they get closer to my coast line? Like this example..... http://www.1d6.com/artaria/images/artaria_map_main.jpg I have a border and coastline mask available, but every time I keep getting the reverse effect, it goes from dark at the coastline to lighter the further out you go.

    Many thanks.

    One way to do it...

Create a new layer called 'Glow' (or whatever).
Select your sea area then, on the Glow layer, and fill with the lighter colour you want to use.
    Select your land area.
You'll probably want to play about with these settings but as an example, on the Select menu, grow your selection by 20px, then Feather selection by 100px.
On the Glow layer, invert the selection and hit delete.
This should leave you with a nice lighter area around the coast that fades out.
