...On geography and such perhaps somebody else can school you more but a couple of things regarding "rain shadow" stand out to me. I'd expect to see more lush vegetation along one side of the mountain ranges. Also not sure how the desert surrounding the mountain works out in terms of realism...

I was thinking along the same lines last night as I was reading some of the realism threads here and looking at satellite shots of the Earth. On the eastern part of the continent I dialed back on the forest area. As for the desert, I was thinking of the rough area as more rocky and perhaps a bit high elevation, but not mountains, tried to make that more clear below.
