Tutorial updated to version 1.1 covering several ways to enhance your heightmaps. The newest version is attached in the opening post. I actually discovered few new tricks while making the guide and now I just have to find time to use them.

A quick note - on page 7 you say "take the pen tool", where it is actually called the "brush" tool

    Thanks for the tutorial.

Good recommendation software. Geocontrol 2 looks awesome.

Thanks for the tutorial again, and thanks for the two bitmaps too. Once I have some free time (you know what I mean, uh ?) I will try them. The feed-back shall follow on this topic or another

May I ask a stupid question ? Once you have produced this high resolution map, how do you use it in order to create a large map ? For a ground texture, using it as a gimp brush works pretty well for me, but for the mountains this is another matter, as their size, heights, etc... make them quite useless as a brush.

I dont use the bumpmaps as a brush, but standard gray scale image. in order to create large images i create several bumpmaps and copy paste them into one large image. Then just edit them to blend them together.

Sorry for the late reply (I had missed the question). Yes, I make a brush out from the textures I use and then paint with them.
