    If you use it for specific directions as on a hex-map, there is no reason not to use simple NE or SW. It is clear from the raster which direction is meant, even if it doesn't fit the direction on a real compass perfectly.

    According to wikipedia, Homer sometimes used a 6 winds compass. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_compass_winds)
    The names going clockwise starting at north: Boreas, Eurus, Apeliotes, Notos, Argestes, Zephyrus.

    Whilst you may not be able to make use of it for your game, I would love to see a 6 direction compass rose that includes up and down, and how it is incorporated into a map. Anybody want to give it a try?
