Wip March/April 2012 Lite Challenge Entry: Ocean's End: The Legendary Waterfalls

My entry for this challenge and my second map on this website.

This map was made using photoshop and my Intuos4. The waterfalls are the ink blot image provided. This was very fun to make. Took about 4 hours total to make. Thanks for your consideration

That looks pretty cool! You'll need the latest wip tag in your entries in order for the thumbnail scraper to pick up your entry (I don't want to put it here because I don't want to mess up said scraper; see the other entries/stickies).

well than it was not only the clouds, for me, water and land colors are too similiar. What I want to say, you really need to 'look' and 'concentrate' to understand this map.

What I really like, is the way you used that inkbloats as abysses. But I find it might be better if the hues or lightness of land and sea would differ more...

    Wip Color Balance

Here is one with the color changed a bit. You should (hopefully) be able to see much easier now.

    I reelly like it now...

Is there some background story? where does the water go? What scale is it, by the mountains and volcanoes I would assume total width of the map to be around 150 - 300 km?

    Wip

Here is the rough short story of it. Also, updated image with a scale bar at the bottom. EDIT: the size of the scale bar didn't maintain original size when I saved it, so it is fixed.

    Ocean's End: The Legendary waterfall

The waterfalls are legend. The waterfalls are a mystery. No one really knows where they came from but ancient stone carved text from the surrounding islands tell of a story that there used to be four energy focusing temples. These temples converted energy deep underground that provided life giving energy to the people of the islands.

According to the ancient stone carved text; massive storms, tsunamis, and typhoons began to occur due to the displacement of the energy from the temples. Of these disasters, a massive earthquake claimed the islands that these temples were built upon. Massive endless waterfalls appeared almost as if the world was taking back the immense amount energy that was taken from those temples. When the temples disappeared, all buildings and people vanished as though they never existed.

That is the legend. Speculation still occurs due to the fact that if all the civilizations disappeared after the disaster, then who was around to tell the stories?

Today, no one is able to go into the waterfalls safely. The winds and fog are so dense that light can't even get through. Several ships and helicopters were lost in the attempts to explore these abysses.
