    Holy rusted metal Batman, you're right. I just stared at it for ages and forced by eyes to shift perspective and lo and behold it did. Sorry rlucci, they say art is subjective, but Ravs is correct it will look concave to some people and convex to others.

    There is another map that was posted recently with the same issue. I explained in that thread... can't seem to find it right now. Anyway, it has to do with the lighter colored floor and darker surroundings. We have been trained from early age to equate lighter with higher - consider a standard map that has the white peaks denoting highest elevation as well as the water color darker is deeper. So when you are presented with a map like this regardless of the bevel we immediately process the lighter color as higher. The shadows simply magnify the effect and make it more pronounced.

    get rid of the highlights on the floor all together

    it should get rid of the embossed look

    I had a bit of time this afternoon to work on my map. I tweaked and experimented and generally messed around with it until I hit on something that I like better and doesn't lend itself to that inverted 3-d effect so much as my last map...

    The first version is still my favorite.
