Thread: Sept 2012 Entry: The Toganda Caverns

I opted for something completely different in the end (the tower).

Just as a quick layers example in the case of this map, if I was doing it on layers, I would have the photo image of the cliff on the bottom layer. I wouldn't edit this "base image" at all, I would just leave it as is.

Then on the next layer I would have the solid black background bit you have there covering up much of that photo image.. This is so I can add or remove more of the photo image just by adding more black or deleting it as needed. Because this black is on it's own layer and doesn't affect anything else, it's a super quick adjustment.

Then on a third layer, I'd begin adding the caves themselves. So you'd add that clouds bit and begin colouring it.

    Thanks Larb, good advice.

I progressed a little further on the details. I added some texture to the interior cave walls and put a border around it.

with all of the stalagmite/tites that you have in silhouette, I would assume that there would be SOME visible on the far wall. I wouldn't put too many of them though, just enough to show that there ARE some.

    looking good otherwise

Oh yeh, the texture works a lot better with the image now. The border might be able to come down a bit in vibrancy or color warmth, but that's completely your call... don't listen to me. It's looking good!

Looks good to me, too. Personally, if I was doing it, I would try to make the "cut-away" look like rocks ... but that's just because I was heavily influenced by cut-away geography & geology illustrations in our big ole Atlas when I was a kid.

Added a Nameplate with a scale. I think I'm done.

The image attachment isn't working for me. Can you re-upload it?

I'm going to leave the challenge open a little longer to allow you to get this uploaded. Make sure it has attached and then I'll close the challenge.

That's odd, I saw my map when I first posted it now it's not even in the Manage my attachments thing. The final copy with the legend I made this afternoon is on my office computer, so there is no way to retrieve it tonight. So I just went ahead and put the label on without the fancy frame. Close enough. Thanks for holding this for me.
