I don't know if this belongs here as it only has tentative links to cartography but many mappers like to have a back story to their maps and as a lot of maps are created for gaming, some of these resources may help build a narrative. Others may find inspiration for place names or placing certain features on their maps.

The first link is about the folklore surrounding trees. It's part of a Scottish conservation site but this section I am linking to discusses folklore. There is evidence to suggest that man has been practicing the art of coppicing and managing wood for thousands of years. Woods and forests make invaluable habitats for many resources and raw materials and have been the source of many superstitions.

The next link is to a site that discusses archaeology and mythology and has quite a lot of articles about different things such as how certain structures were aligned with the stars or the deliberate transport of particular stones over long distances for construction purposes, along with specific examples of such sites. Again these may provide a back story, if nothing else, to certain settlements or monuments.

I hope these are useful to someone.
