    Question Water filling

So I've been wandering the internets and I stumbled upon the map of Pollexia(http://www.cartographersguild.com/ca...ia-heruca.html), and although I'm not making maps per se myself, I'm building a world in one 2d game, not really important which one. The thing is, minimaps that are supposed to show the user how the game world looks like are really simple and doesn't look very appealing. So I've read a thing or two on the forums and I guess I can tinker with it a bit to look it better, but what intrigues me the most is the water filling in the Pollexia map and I can't seem to find a way to do it without just drawing everything by hand. Any help would be appreciated.

Attaching a sample minimap from the aforementioned game.

PS. Excuse my english, I'm not a native speaker.

    Cheers.

The only way to do it without doing it all by hand is to do it in 3D and then convert to 2D. Maybe use ViewingDale's Instant Islands
    ViewingDale
    or Wilbur?
    Current Wilbur Version

Doing it in 3D first might seem like overkill, and in a way it is, but going off the map you posted doing it by hand would not be that challenging/ time consuming-
it's not got that many rivers in it. There are a couple of tuts on here on creating rivers in Photoshop- but again that's 2D and by hand.
