Yeah, after finishing this one off I thought it might have made for a decent entry for the lite challenge, maybe with less emphasis on towns and more on the rivers/broads, which I love going out on whenever im visiting

Hmm... might do a Malta map in this style over the coming days and will track my progress as a mini-tut

well, there's so little to this that i fear posting a tut might be a bit redundant - there's very few steps to show. the coast outline, rivers and roads are simple linework. there's a few overlay textures above it. the wave lines take a bit of work, though its just expanding the coast selection and feathering it, inverting it and deleting it, leaving the waves. that's about it really

It does sound simple. I guess that's why it looks as good as it does. Very neat and clean, no distracting extras Still, I'd love to see a mini-tut, if you have the time!

Delightful map! I just got finished reading aloud to my kids a book set on this, albeit in the 1930s. Arthur Ransome wrote a series of kids' books known by the title of the first one, Swallows and Amazons. This one, The Coot Club, has plucky kids sailing several of these rivers and broads (lakes or backwaters), adventures, mishaps, and some fun details of life between the wars.

Another of the series has kids not only sailing, but mapping as they do so, in an area just south of this Norwich map -- not a bad way to slip your kids a little positive cartography propaganda :-).
