    Default *** Feb/March Lite Challenge Voting! ***

The challenge was to map a river, and we have some great entries! To see all the maps check out the thumbnails:

Please vote for the entries you feel deserve to win. You can vote for as many as you like. The voting will run for the next four days, and the winner will get a Silver Compass and Honorary River Police Status

    May the best rivers win!

Wow, a very tough one to decide. I limited myself to one vote, given how few entries there were. Each map had something to recommend it, but I chose JB's map because I really liked the vintage map look that he produced.

great challenge and such a shame I couldn't enter (though I still want to finish my proposed entry some-time). All 4 entries bring something different, especially in terms of projection, though i had to vote for the Amazonas, by Beoner.

Yep so I missed my own challenge. Shame on me.

I voted for Oh Tarn, because I thought it was not only nicely executed, it also had all the elements there, made sense and could even be educational.

But the others were good, too, and I think this is evident by the close race we're having. Feedback:

The Amazonas: I like the map, but in the end it's an existing river and we all know that real rivers follow real physics anyway; the idea of the challenge was to correctly map a river based on the geography around it... and if you don't make it up, then that part of it just doesn't get done, it's predefined, and the challenge is somewhat short-circuited.

Mangrove River Postcard: I love this map, and I can totally imagine this place. It'd make for a great setting. However, the surrounding terrain isn't really defined and as such it's hard to say whether or not the river system works. There are no mistakes in it ... that I can tell (I am not a specialist, by any means). If this had had something to indicate where the watersheds/drainage basins are... anything to show why the rivers are the way they are, it would have been my clear favorite.

It's A River: A beautiful map, I like the style a lot. I considered to vote for thisthis, but in the end I think there are actually two problems with the river. Not major ones, mind you; one, I am not sure why the lake outflow is in the NW - next to a mountain. Should this terrain not be elevated compared to, say, the SW side of the lake? The other problem I see is just west of the black city, where the river seems to run straight through a small mountain range. Not impossible, and I am probably nitpicking, but in the end this cost It's A River my vote.

I am still very impressed with all of these maps, can't say that enough.

I have to agree with you bartmoss. I did think about it when I was wondering what should I make as an entry, but I ended up going with this anyway, more as challenge to myself than any other thing.

I voted for the Mangrove River Postcard by jbgibson because I liked it - all the compex rivers by mid-west - and the idea is kind of different.
All the others are, just as bartmoss pointed, very good.

    @Edit: Well, poll is closed, and we have a winner;

    Congratulations veracusse, well diserved

Nicely done, veracusse! Polish that style, and you can be illustrating geographical articles.

And to answer your question, Zarylin, the colors of icons showing progression of settlement works well -- the difference between black, purple, and blue though are slight enough to be confusing. Tough to show a time sequence when the members of each set are interspersed, so your method is about as good as could be devised.

Beoner, yours looks like it DID come from an article or textbook. Very nice reference style; if the mythical :-) article title were something like Tributaries of the Amazon, the focus is perfect.

And thanks for the votes, everybody! I had fun with my postcard, even if I didn't have time to make a killer map of it :-).

I'm going to discount Veracusse voting for themselves - as that was the vote that broke the tie. Therefore, this month we have a three way tie! Congrats to Veracusse, Beoner and jbgibson for three excellent entries. The silver compasses and shiny river police badges are in the mail.

Thanks for the voting guys, really appreciate it

Oh, and congrats jbgibson, you had a great entry.

Oooooh, cool -- if I have a double River Police badge does that make me a sergeant or something? :-). I really will work twice as hard to gracefully steer watercourses aright, but if two is silly I'm fine with just one. As for the silver lite medal - thanks!
