Nice stuff though it would have been cool to see more WIP of the map itself building up.
So now we know what really happened... A rat with a net full of asteroids.
@ Max: I was hesitant to post more WIPs as I did this over quite a brief period of time and didn't want to spam the forum. Because I had to work quickly a lot of the time there was no 'buildup' to speak of; I went from raw sketch to almost complete mountains in one go, for example. If you'd like I could post a layer-by-layer view? Here's the original sketch I started off with.
Apparently I accidentally left out the roads alltogether in the 'after' image! Not too noticeable, but it needed fixing anyway. Update with roads, reshaped meteorite impacts, clearer underwater terrain upheaval, more debris, brighter lettering, clearer smoke, and some extra islands. Also slightly less contrast!

That is GREAT. One of the most unique ideas I've seen here. I do agree with Max though; if you added some labels and/or extra details it would really help fill it out.

To be honest I'm not great at labels, but I may try! It does look a bit empty still. If anyone has any good examples or tutorials to link me to I'd be very grateful.
On a side note, does anyone know when this contest ends? The 15th, right?
