Wip December/January 2014 Lite Challenge Entry: Small town in a valley

My first entry for a challenge ever will be a 3D one (i saw no rule whether 3D models are allowed or not, so delete this entry if they're not )

Like the title says, it's a small town (medieval) in a valley (which is not quite finished). Also i'm not happy with the ground texture by now, but let's see what i can do until 15th.

Very cool little village. I agree, the ground texture needs some work, but this is a good start.

...finished: That's all my PC can handle, otherwise i would have enlarged it by another small valley maybe, but... sh*t happens

It's actually a quite simple one, the town is constructed by 4 or 5 types of timber framed houses, 1 stone house, 2 churches and the city wall. The village in front consists of only 1 type of house + another small church. The trees are always the same one, too Otherwise the progress would not have been that fast

But the interesting stuff about a 3D model's always not the general view, but certain nice perspectives, so i'll include one of them:

Tell me if i should include more views of the model.

Though the render looks interesting, I wouldn't call it a map. A map is intended to give informations in a way or another and your work lacks of it imho.

Like i already wrote, i found no rule handling the use of 3D models as entries. It's rather difficult to make a "map" out of a 3D model. Or you mean i should give information about buildings or a short description in a corner of the view?
If this isn't a valid entry, delete or just ignore it

3-D & isometric and even side view drawings have all been used as entries in prior challenges. Whether or not people like it or feel it qualifies for the challenge is usually decided by the voters.

3D is okay for a map in a challenge, but don't forget the difference between a map and a render. A map should provide information. You could render a topdown view with cool effects (like Bogie's maps 2.0) and make a small legend in Gimp/PS.

Yeah, as others have pointed out, a map should provide information.
You could label some of the more prominent buildings.

I know you said you're finished, but I think there's good potential for you
to place something interesting in those hills; a watchtower or cave, for
example. It would give you something to label.

If you run out of things to label, you might also give us the name of
the village (on the map) and some founding information.

Out of curiosity, does the program you are using give you the ability
to see your model from all different angles. That'd be cool. Maybe
you could take a couple different perspectives and combine them (edit
together the images) into one map. Might be too large of a file though.

At any rate, this is really cool and inspiring. Nice work
The best maps are the ones we like the most after looking at the longest.
