Wip December/January 2014 Lite Challenge Entry: The village of Crescent Lake

So... I'm not sure where the line is between a drawing/painting and a map? But I have a basic idea for a village map thingy. (If it will count as a map?) I'm new to mapping, but I'm fairly good at sketching/painting, and I think I could make a decent hybrid. :p

Anyway, this is my plan, and I'm going to work on it and make it look descent, but before I do, I wanted to place it here as an idea, and if it DOESN'T count as a map, just let me know and I will withdraw it gracefully, and try an aerial view instead.

Okay thanks, here's my idea (decent-ish sketch to follow soon).

Technically, a map is considered a visual
representation of an area. However, most think
    there's more to it.

    Here's the difference between a painting and a map;
a map will provide information about what is being
shown. In this case, because it's a village, I can
imagine you will be able to do some labeling with
important buildings or locations. Some background
    might also be nice.

You also mentioned something about perspective,
but I don't think this has as much effect. You can give
us the information about the place however you'd like.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you will do
The best maps are the ones we like the most after looking at the longest.

Thanks! That actually explained just what I wanted to know. I'll actually do some real work on it, now that I know I can (probably) make it into a real map (Or die trying).

Speaking of tropes... the village of Crescent Lake is something I included in my (for lack of a better word) novel. I deleted what I'd written because it was too cliche... and entirely inaccurate as far as demographics go. But it gives me something to map.

Edit: Small progress... I sketched in a woodsy area on the plateau, made the houses look a TINY bit less like my 4 year old drew them, and painted in the water. (Used the "clone" tool, and the pool bottom pattern and just played with some effects.

Thanks!! I like drawing a LOT, and this GIMP thing makes the painting part a lot more forgiving. I'm pretty happy.

Think I backed myself into a corner, though.... Everything I try to do with the houses looks so wrong

Added a bit more shading to the grass, and FINALLY got my first house done

I probably won't finish on time, but it's something to do

    Okay, so ...

I made a mistake and I *cannot* make a map of this area from this point of view... it's just not working. I'm going to try to fix it, in a more conventional style, but I'm sure it won't be done on time. But it will be better than what I have now... :/

    Is starting over even allowed?
