    Default Help with Burning Texture

I work with photoshop and for the map that I'm working on right now I want to create a part of the land that has been burt and seem to be kinda dead. Ive tried a few things but I haven't been very happy with the way that it has looked. If anyone has any suggestions I would be really grateful.

What style of map? Are you looking for brush techniques, textures, or something else?

I'm I would Like a brush technique but if I could get that to work the way I wanted it to I would be happy with a texture.

These are three of my attempts at it.

    Urghh... how badly burnt?

Problem is... people associate "burnt" with "dead" and that's not necessarily true.

Burning kills what's alive... but new growth will occur fairly soon, and will be *faster* and usually better (food wise) or stronger than what was there before.

Just search "burnt soil gardening" and you'll get an idea.

    ANYway..

Are you looking specifically for textures

Or... ignore all thaat since you ninja-ed me....

I think 2 is more realistic (or getting there) but doesn't really fit with the rest of the map

I'll play with some stuff, but IDK how much help I will be...

I think #2 would be a good template to use to create your own hand drawn crackles. The green background looks far to living and is throwing my eyes off a bit too. it might also be possible to create your own brush that has cracks and then use brush dynamic settings to get it spaced and rotating at random as you draw with it.

Jalyha, I'm sorry I ninja-ed you, I just got done with a karate class so I must have still been in that mode. I know that burt land is actually good for land, but this land is supposed to be more of a dead kind of feeling, burt is the thing I kind of connected with dead. I don't know if I want it to be as much as a burt feeling as a dead feeling. This is a short description of the land:

Clouds swirled, the grey forms shaping into a mysterious and fascinating whirl that hid all traces of light. The sun had risen but there was no sign of anything other than darkness. A foul stench of smoke blew in the wind, not the smoke of a campfire but from a fire fueled by corpses. The land was covered by an eerie white sheet of frozen dew, and a steady chill ran through the lifeless trees of the forest. Aphotic beauty lay about, haunting every sound that the wind held.

I'm sorry for the eeriness of all that but it's the way I wrote it a long time ago. also there is a forest of dead trees in the land as well.

Madcowchef, to be honest I have not been working with Photoshop and have not created a brush yet but maybe it's time that I give that a try. :\

I made a .... thing... that looks like burnt ground, but idk if it would work with your map, or how to get it to you without a background or whatever or make it a brush or anything D:

And then I tried it against your image, and your #2 looked better anyway, so...

Sorry Madcowchef, That was a typo I meant that I had not been working with photoshop for very long and therefor I had not made a brush yet. Your brain is fine.

Thank you for trying for me Jalyha
