    Default (WIP) Land of the....

    Hey there guys!
So after trying my luck with a city map, this time I started experimenting with a new style for my regional maps.
As I suck at coloring stuff, this map again brings a more saturated and monochromatic feel to it, and I experimenting with a new type of mountain and icon set.
My first WIP, and let´s see where this goes:

This is really beautiful so far! Something about this really appeals to me. It's a tiny bit hard to see some details, but that may because you've posted a smaller size?

Those mountains are awesome. I may have to steal that technique from you.

I agree with Diamond, especially about the mountains. Despite the great style, I do think there is something wrong with it. I'm not sure I've pinned it down yet, but it might be that everything looks a bit blurry (and I swear it isn't alcohol making me say that ). The blurriness works well for the mountains and forests, but detracts (in my opinion) from the roads/rivers/coastlines/icons/and some labels.

Also, I really like the way the mountains in the middle fade near the base, but I don't think you've managed to capture that effect with some of the other mountain ranges (notably the lower left mainland area).

Overall though, a definitely pleasing style.

THW, maybe Im blind or something, but in my original file the rivers, roads and coastlines aren´t that blurry! But I agree with you on the icons, they were a bit blurry too! Thanks for the tips on the mountains too!

New update, I think I´m almost finish here!

No advice except: next time, make it bigger!

It looks really fantastic. This might be my favorite map of 2014 so far.

Really sweet style Carbus! I'm with Diamond on this: Favorite of 2014 thus far. And pretty close to All-time Favorite as well.

Tips, advice? I'd like to see more contrast. At the moment, it's all very mid-grey (no real lights or darks). The eye is designed to be attracted to contrast, so don't be afraid to punch up your range of values a bit. Also, with color involved, you want to put your most vibrant colors on your center of interest (the map). This is subtle, but... Looking closely at your latest image upload... it appears that everything inside of your map borders has been greyed out; there's more color saturation around the edges of your document (and a bit too much range in value) compared with what's on your map -- so.

I took the liberty of making a few adjustments in photoshop. It may be more adjustment than you ultimately like - personal preference and all - but it'll illustrate what I'm talking about I hope.

Otherwise, the bottom left corner could use cleaning up where the border is extended a mite too far.
