Need help with a Volacan map

OK so going to do a map with an open lava pit/volcano mouth...but am a little beyond my depth. Got the lava and upper crust but trying to show the separation between the two more clearly. I have access to GIMP and Photoshop CS6 any help for showing ledge and height over an open lava pit as well as any suggestions for other detail to bring this map to life would be greatly appreciated. For me this will be a one time use map but will be posted for others as I havent been able to find anything close to what I'm looking for.

give it a perspective tilt and add a pseudo height map effect

Nice work around...still had multiple layers so I was able to work strictly on the upper layer, to keep the lava more flat, also decided not to tilt it but kept the straight down for the effect I was looking for, then added a dim glow around the lip which brought me to this...still a bit bland but looks a lot better thanks john
