Default Seeking recommendation for literature on map tools/ GImp software

I am looking through the vastness of the endless black abyss that is the internet, and was wondering if anyone had a good tip on where to find beginner friendly tutorials for map tools or GIMP software?

Well you can start here. There are a plethora of tutorials as well as information relating to other sources of information regarding most of the popular mapmaking software.

I would highly recommend torstan's thread as a starting point:
    http://www.cartographersguild.com/tu...ps-tricks.html

You can flip through the tutorials at his website fantasticmaps.com as well.

More generally though, I started by just browsing the tutorial section of the forum and picking out the threads that interested me and giving the techniques a try.

I'm assuming you mean the use of GIMP as it related to mapping, not so much the very basics of getting around in GIMP.
