Default April 2014 Entry - The Black Coast

I don't know if I'll have time to finish this, since I'll be on vacation starting on the 23rd, but I'm going to try.

This is a runner-up to the idea I originally had, which was a City Infernal, but I knew there's no way in.... hell I'd finish that, so I opted to go with a section of the Abyssal Plane of my conworld instead. This is really the first time I've worked seriously to come up with ideas for this portion of my mythos, so it'll all be done pretty much on the fly and in the months and years to come I'm sure I'll change things half a million times. But for now, here's the Black Coast, a region of infernal city-states, roving cannibal tribes, and the Sacros Inferni, a sort of Abyssal biker gang whose hellcycles are powered by human souls.

Thanks to (I think) Schwarzkreuz for the parchment.

Mountains. Lots of mountains. And contour lines, though I'm not 100% happy with them. If I set their opacity any higher, they dominate the map, but if I leave their opacity low like it is here, you can't really pick them out too well. I guess the answer is to lower the opacity on the parchment layer, but I like it so much I don't want to mess with it...

Started doing a little labeling and city placement, along with the flags of the Great Infernal Cities of this region. I hid the contour lines for now; I think it looks better like this - opinions?

Looking really good! Very nice hellish names I agree that it looks better without both the relief and the height lines, but it'd be interesting to see the other option as well… Only height lines, I mean.

Good flags! And yeah, I agree with Lingon about the mountains. Isn't the Mare Sanguinarius supposed to be a bit "bloody"?

I hope you do get a chance to finish this, I'd like to see where you take it.

I think I should be able to finish it; I have this whole weekend free before I go on vacation, so it should be doable. One thing I'm going to do is get rid of the embossed gold symbols for the cities, and tone down the flag colors significantly; I'm not comfortable with the bright colors.

I decided to change things up drastically, since the original design wasn't so much a coast as it was a gulf. I also decided to go with icons instead of pseudo-atlas.
