Forgotten Realms style with GIMP?

As the title says, is it possible to do a Forgotten Realms style map (top down perspective) in GIMP? And if so, is there any way to make the work easier (patterns, etc)? If you don't know what map style I'm talking about, it's the one that's used here: http://goo.gl/o8UpVR (The link was long, I had to shorten it.)

Not that I use GIMP, but yeah, that would be easy enough in any image editor like GIMP or Photoshop, as well as vector apps like Illustrator, Inkscape, or Xara Designer Pro. Look at the various samples in the Finished Maps forum, you're sure to find something close. There might also be a tutorial for this style of map.
