Default May 2014 Entry - The Sahuagin point of view

Hello there. I was playing with an archipelago map when the idea to use it for may challenge comes to me the idea is to try to map an archipelago with the point of view of an underwater race, So i'll try to make the map with the point of view of sahuagins, an underwater race from the forgotten realms. I first heard of that monster race by playing baldur's gate 2 and the interesting point is that they look like a kinda evolved race, acording to the architecture of their city, an important point to make a sahuagin mapper realise a quite "complex" map.
I only have the basis right now and i think placing elements in the ocean will be a tough challenge but i'll give that a try!

From an out-of-water perspective, we normally fill land with more than one color, using separate colors to identify forest/plain/mountain. And then we simply use shades of blue to suggest not everything is equal under the sea surface.
Don't know how this would work, but at such a starting point of your project, why not trying the opposite thing: one color in different shades for land, a variety of colors for sea (sandy sea plains, deep sea, coralian areas, i don't know).

Thanks for the advices pixie, using less colors on lands and more on the ocean seems a good idea i'll try that to represent various land use underwater.
That's funny Lingon how sometimes ideas are just in the air and we only catch them, i guess two cartographers are receptive to the same ideas
About the map i have reworked quite a bit underwater relief to give them a more central place on the map, as it is suposed to be the point of view of an underwater creature. I have done on purpose a strong relief effect on oceans to focus the attention on it, maybe it is a bit too strong?

A bit too strong to my tastes but for a Sahuagin? Who knows...

I followed your advice max and soften a bit the relief colors. I also start to add buildings underwater
