Thread: First digital map. Thoughts?

    Default First digital map. Thoughts?

So this was my first crack at digital mapping using a Wacom Bamboo tablet that was given to me by a friend. I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing as far as utilization of Adobe Illustrator goes, but its been interesting learning the ropes. Definitely drinking from a firehose. Any feedback from digital mappers regarding brush usage and other finer points would be greatly appreciated. This map started as a brainstorming bit from a notebook I scanned in. Its very basic as I wanted to just get a grasp on what it would take to finish a map using Adobe Illustrator, but I definitely want to begin to advance my skills and style using these tools. Thanks so much in advance and I hope you enjoy!

    Not bad Red.
What led you to try Illustrator with the tablet rather than Photoshop or GIMP or Krita or some other more drawing-painting program?
It isn't a bad idea to go vector... there are a lot of benefits if you master vector. I'm just curious.

Honestly knowing absolutely nothing about any program and having a few friends that did, they pointed me in that direction. Still not 100% sold on Illustrator, but I'm still learning a ton each day. Currently working on 3 commissions as I learn more. I'm completely open to switching to any program really. Actually got CLIP STUDIO on a great sale and downloaded Inkscape as well. After working a bit more I really am not happy with that map but wanted to just finish something instead of spending days trying to figure out what I was doing. Trying to get some maps under my belt. I still have no idea what I'm doing, but I feel like I'm making a little progress. Let me know what you think.

Here's some of what I've been trying out as of late.

These are all quite nice Redleg, I especially like the line work you have started in the third link, any chance we'll see it finished.
