Turn brush dynamics off. I'm thinking you have some pressure based dynamic which will stamp lightly as soon as the pressure hits (assuming you are using a tablet).

GIMP brush help
I'm making a map in GIMP using Gidde's brush pack, and whenever I start to draw something the first symbol is always translucent. Is there a way to solve this?

Also- I'm following Gidde's hand drawn mapping tutorial, but the most recent version of GIMP doesn't have the random size feature that the tutorial uses. Is it just located in a different place, or does it not exist anymore?
4 years is a long time
that tutorial was wrote in 2010 for 2.6
a lot has changed 4.5 years ( 5 years is one FULL computer generation )
almost ALL the code underlying gimp is NEW
the current 2.8.14 is almost a 99% complete new rewrite of the old code
the layer and brush dialog windows are different and the GUI is different
think of it as using a guide for windows7 ON windows 8.1
