Default Feb / Mar 2015 Lite Challenge: Ground/Floor Tiles

After a long time of absence I will join a challenge again.
This months title comes in handy as it gives me the chance to expand my texture library and experiment with features I have never used before. My focus in this challenge will be ground/floor tiles.

I will use Substance Designer, which is a node based, procedural texturing program that uses elements you know from PS/Gimp. The result is a texture with different channels that can be applied to a 3D model, so I have to fake it to 2D.

Here is an example of a wall texture I created earlier.

Now I can concentrate on a more complex tile. I want to create a stone floor tile with a flexible mosaic, border and other nerdy stuff.

If you like you can download the free Substance Player from Allegorithmic's website, follow this WIP and play with the Substance.

That is looking great, Katto! Looks like you've got a handle on Substance Designer now. I can only imagine the incredible things you'll be able to do with that skill.

Thanks THW, hours of watching YouTube tutorial videos were well spent.

I think here is my final texture. It is a stone floor tile with a mosaic. In the screenshot you can see what tweaks are available. Of course you can feed in your picture, that will be split into a mosaic but also you can adjust the amount of tiles, size, scale, rotation, border type, color etc.

Nicely done, Katto. Just learning SD myself, it´s a great piece of software. Translating from 3D to 2D isn´t easy as it is hard to avoid lighting information that ruins the tileability. Perhaps something like FilterForge or Genetica would be better for 2D textures. But for 3D there is nothing better I think. Can you share some light on the process from 3D to 2D?
