    Thanks for the precision Lostatsea.
So as per the unanimous advice, the second tiling is more fitting for cartography purposes (what I also agree now), I will keep the second one for the challenge.

So there goes the first one down the drain .....

That one is really cool! Is this how black holes look when they start to form?

No the black hole "forms" when the collapsing star passes below the Schwarzschild radius what happens extremely fast. Basically what you would see during a very short time is a fast shrinking sphere which becomes a dot and disappears.
But the space time in the neighbourhood of the black hole stays heavily distorted so that objects falling in are seen like changing in shape and size untill the black hole's horizon - after that they can no more be seen and finish their life in the singularity where even atoms are torn apart by the tidal gravity forces.
As the infalling trajectory is a spiral, I would have to introduce in the picture a strong spiraloid deformation so that it looks like objects falling in a black hole. You gave me an idea, I will look if I can do that

So in a map elements' set must also be a cartouche. Here is one :

I left for the last the hardest. A map border. I do not want to cheat by just making a tiling and then cut it in bands. So I will have to produce a fractal which will be contained in bands naturally. Wish me luck

...just came by for the kicks... Good luck with the border! I'm looking forward to see them.

    I think I got it
This is very much WIP - I did neither color balance nor gradient tweaking but unfortunately I had little time and will have even less untill the closure of teh challenge.
So if you can help me one more time in the choice, you have my gratitude.

I did 2 very different map boarder styles.
First one is brocade cloth ornemental style and the second one is clockwork/sextant style (beautiful fractal this one if I may say so myself).

Which style would you prefer ?

Personally, I like the second one (the black & gold one) but no doubt others will disagree!

(Eek, I need to get cracking on finishing up my own WIPs for this challenge!)

From one true fractal artist to another -- both are gorgeous!

Agreed, both are great, I like the gold one best as it looks more "finished".
