This is my first real attempt at making a map. I was aiming for a "period piece" style that evoked an early medieval feel but had some elements of modern mapping (like more true-to-fact scale, and landmass, river, mountain shapes, etc). Curious to hear suggestions on what works, what doesn't, what to add.

The context of this map is a dungeons and dragons campaign setting heavily influenced by Migration Period Germanic culture (4th -9th centuries).

Definitely hit the mark with both the text and the animals. I wonder if the rivers aren't a bit too jagged - in comparison to the already noticeable curvature in the rest of the map (the currents in the ocean, stylization of animals, fonts, the hills, etc.)

That's really cool! I like the flavor of this map a lot...very appropriate.
As to what to add ... it depends on how much detail you want. I think the map works as is. But you could still do more refinement if you wanted. For example find an appropriate abstract symbol to denote forests.

This looks brilliant for a first map. More decorative elements (border, more animals) would add to the "period" flavor. Also, the maps of this era have a "dislike for emptiness" - so fill it up with drawings if you need!

Great start, if you can do more for it, it will be even better.
