Default Sagitarii - practice city map

    Hi all!

Now that I'm starting to get the hang of regional maps a bit, I though I'd start exploring city maps for a change. I've dabbled in city maps already in the past, but that was before I got my little drawing tablet. An unfinished but rather okay example of that old style is Cailltir. Might be I reboot that project some time in the future! If I have some spare time. Which I usually don't have. So yeah, basically never.

However, I do have some spare time for new projects, especially for ones that help me develop my mapping skills. Below is a very early version of the city of Sagitarii. It has nothing to do with the constellation or the mythological figure - it was simply the first name that popped up. Building names etc will also be entirely random: since this is an exercise in map drawing, I can afford to be terribly lazy with the toponymy bit.

Enough talky talk. Here's the WIP!

    Next up:
    • The outer city wall and some more delicious houses
    • some squigglies in the water (naturally!)
    • more detail to the castle on the rock
    • a handful temples, guild houses and other such public thingamajigs
    • terrain squigglies all over the place (except for the water, obviously)
    • bridges (at least 4)
    • some ships in the harbour - maybe (if I can convince myself that learning to draw those has some use, however faint)
    • colour!!

A terribly long list, but hey, nothing like a challenge to start your day .

Also: I just created a portfolio website! Now if you click my signature, it will spit you out there!

Looking great, Caenwyr. I've always liked your regional maps, so I'm really interested to see where you take this.

Alright, another update for you guys! The buildings are almost done, all I need is some houses and a noteworthy building or two on the left bank of the river and I'm done!

    Still to do:
    • work on those terrain squigglies (they're especially terrible around the Baths of Zaridion!),
    • some detail to the Hippodrome,
    • throw in some ships, some piers and maybe even a shipyard,
    • and the biggest challenge of them all: colouring!

And a version with a very rudimentary, VERY ugly legend:
